Mauna Kea & The Future

Mauna Kea

During our week on the Big Island, we spent a good deal of time checking out the sights and enjoying an atmosphere that is different than Oahu. I wanted to take some time to stop and talk about our trip to Mauna Kea for a minute. This was the most impressive part of our trip and something that we truly enjoyed. Mauna Kea is a volcano between Kailua-Kona and Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The volcano is 13,796 feet tall. When you're at the top it feels like you're in a different world. The air is so thin and dry up there that it is very different than being at a lower elevation. We are used to being able to breathe easily and walking around normally. Taking a few steps when you first get to the summit of Mauna Kea is a very interesting experience. I steped out of our rented Jeep and walked around to the back to get my camera gear out and I had to stop and just stand there for a minute. I was dizzy from just that little bit of movement. Halfway up Mauna Kea, there is a visitor's center where they tell everyone to stop for a minimum of 30 minutes to adjust to the elevation before going to the summit. If you continue all the way up there is a chance that you would become sick from the sudden decrease in avilable air at the top. When we went up, we stopped at the visitor's center for about an hour before continuing up. We made it to the top just as sunset was starting. The view was spectacular. Being above the clouds was surreal. Plus we were surrounded by telescopes and the terrain looks similar to what you would imagine Mars to be like. It was cold when we got up there, but after dark is was VERY COLD. We wanted to stay to get night shots, so we suffered to cold. It was totally worth it. If you ever get a chance to go to the Big Island, definitely go to the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset.

The Future

We have released our first vlog and are working on more. We have been talking about doing vlogs for a while and it's finally happening. We will be talking about trips we go on, projects we do and other fun things. We are currently working on the vlog for our Big Island trip. Once that is done it'll be posted on social media as well as this blog. We are also about to do an interview with a friend of ours who is a traveling photographer. We're also planning some main videos that we will be working on in the coming months. We also have our drones registered and are almost to the point of flying them legally. They have been grounded while we were figuring out what the FAA wanted to do, so we have been following their guidlines that way we can start filming with them as soon as possible. We are moving more toward video, but we will definitely still be shooting photos. We have our online store up that we've been updating whenever we have new photos and have made it easier to navigate. All of our photos are up for sale through the online store, so anything you see can be printed. We just want to move more in the direction of video, and are excited to be doing more of that in Hawaii now that everything is just about set.
