The Relationship
There is a very unique and interesting relationship between the C-5A 9014 and this beautiful 1957 Chevy Bel Air. The common factor in this would be the ’57 Chevy’s owner. If you’ve been to the Air Mobility Command Museum or know anything about the missile launch from the C-5A in 1974 then at least you know a bit about this specific aircraft. If not, then what was just mentioned is important knowledge since that is what makes this plane so special, and makes it very valuable to have at the museum. In 1974, Mr. M launched 9014 to embark on the missile launch demonstration. That day, he had driven this very same 1957 Chevy Bel Air to work. The day he recovered 9014 from the missile launch demonstration he also drove his ’57 Chevy to work. It was with him (and the aircraft) through this very incredible time in history.
’57 Chevy History
Mr. M let us know that this car has actually been written off as demolished twice. The first time was in 1969 when it was in the rear by a snow plow truck. The owner of the car kept it and made the necessary repairs. Mr. M purchased the car in November of 1970, and in 1983 someone pulled out in front of Mr. M taking out the front end and bent the front part of the frame. Luckily for him, he had stated the car’s value to the insurance company and they figured it was cheaper to repair it than give him the insured value, so he was able to repair it. Mr. M also brought home his three daughters from the hospital in this car. It is full of memories for Mr. M and it was very appropriate to photograph the car with the C-5A 9014.
About The Photo
This photo is actually what is considered a composite image. It is two photos that are merged together in Photoshop. Both the C-5A and the ’57 Chevy were photographed using a technique called light painting or painting with light. We actually photographed the aircraft a little while before we did the car. It took about 6 hours to completely shoot the plane, and when we shot the car it was about a 4 hour photo shoot. The image of the aircraft started out as 30 images that we merged together and edited. The car was around 15-20 images that was also merged and edited. Once that was finished, they were merged together to create the photograph you see above. It can be a really grueling process, but we love what we do. When it’s all over we have a incredible photo that is worthy of being displayed in one’s home or office.
